Rich Outzen, a non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, says the devices that exploded in Lebanon could have been rigged during the manufacture or export process. “It could’ve been done through the insertion of malware remotely. It’s not impossible that there was some code inserted that overheated the batteries without the insertion of explosives,” he told Al Jazeera. But, he added, attackers also could’ve infiltrated production facilities or interrupted shipments and placed explosives into the devices.
