Israel pounds Lebanon as US says Hezbollah truce deal is ‘close’

The war between Hezbollah and Israel has resulted in over 3,000 deaths and widespread destruction. However, there is hope for a ceasefire. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller mentioned significant progress towards a resolution, though nothing is final. Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon indicated that Israel aims to push Hezbollah north of the Litani River, with details of the deal suggesting a withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. The Lebanese army would police the area, overseen by a US-led group. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock echoed the optimism at a G7 meeting. Meanwhile, fighting continues in Gaza without a ceasefire in sight.

Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports on the latest from Washington, DC.
